Unforgettable Thailand

Trisara, Phuket

Trisara, Phuket

If great food, interesting culture, spectacular hotels, and unforgettable experiences are your definition of a great vacation, then Thailand should be on your radar.  Sure, it can be a little touristy in places, but travel beyond those areas and you’ll discover the reasons why Thailand is loved by so many. My latest visit at the end of 2017 was a reminder that the long flight from the U.S. is absolutely worth it.  Read on for a few reasons why I recommend a visit to Thailand.

People: Thailand has earned the nickname “Land of Smiles" for its friendly people. From guides to street vendors, the people continuously charm and capture the hearts of visitors. Service is friendly and authentic, and there is no shortage of easy-going smiles.

Food: From street food to Michelin starred restaurants (Bangkok received its first Michelin star guide in December 2017), your taste buds will surely be overwhelmed, delighted and truly satisfied.

Unforgettable Experiences: From ancient ruins and golden temples, to bustling cities, to elephant sanctuaries and beautiful palm lined beaches – there is so much to see and do here, it’s unlikely you’ll get bored.  Thailand is full of experiences that you’ll remember for years. Consider participating in the morning alms giving to the monks, sea kayak around limestone karst towers, or explore the bustling street markets with a chef and then learn to cook your favorite Thai dishes.

One of my favorite experiences is an afternoon with the rescued elephants at the Four Seasons Tented Camp. Learn about the complexity of wildlife tourism in Thailand, the work that is being done to rehabilitate mistreated elephants, and the bond they form with their Mahout – the person responsible for their rehabilitation and ongoing care. After a few lessons on communication with the elephants, embark on a jungle walk with the elephant by your side. Interacting with these beautiful creatures will surely have you smiling and feeling a little awestruck by their resilience and quirky personalities.

Luxury: Thailand has no shortage of truly luxurious properties. From the stunning Four Seasons Tented Camp in the Golden Triangle to the riverside Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok, to the swanky Trisara beach hideaway on Phuket - the options are excellent. Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai are a popular combination for many travelers, but the less touristy locations also have a few great options. The Six Senses, for example, has a stunning property on Koh Yao Noi and Soneva Kiri offers laid back luxury on Koh Kood.

Beautiful Landscapes: The turquoise water and soft sand beaches of the Thai islands are a vision of paradise to many, but Thailand has more to offer than beaches. Located in the far north where the corners of Laos, Thailand and Burma intersect is the Golden Triangle; a place where cultures and countries collide, and jungle clad mountains give way to lush farmland. It’s a spectacular place to spend a few days.  Bangkok - with its skyscrapers, crowded streets and bumper-to-bumper traffic – really can’t be considered beautiful in the traditional sense, but it too has a lot to offer travelers. Embrace the grittiness of this urban center and you’ll be in for a treat with grand palaces, interesting temples, bustling street markets, rooftop bars and excellent dining.

Food: It’s so good, it warrants a second mention. Wok-charred noodles, spicy papaya salad, smoky grilled skewers with spicy sweet peanut dipping sauce, salt roasted fish…and Kao Soi so good you’ll swear you’re in heaven.

Thailand is an unforgettable destination with something to offer all types of travelers. It's worth the long flight from the U.S. and can easily be paired with other countries in SE Asia.

Make it Happen:  There are no direct flights from the U.S. to Thailand so plan to connect in a travel hub such as Seoul, Hong Kong or Dubai. I recommend a minimum of 9 nights, but more will provide the chance to slow down and really explore. We have many partners in Thailand and can extend complimentary daily breakfast for two, upgrades and resort credit at many high-end properties. Inquire for details.

Discovering an Oasis in Bali

Bali is a well-known tourist destination and is especially popular with surfers, honeymooners and those interested in artisan crafts. While many are drawn to Bali for the beaches, I prefer the lush green jungle and terraced rice paddies surrounding the spiritual heart of Bali - Ubud.  These days, Ubud town is bustling with tourists, restaurants, markets, temples and traffic. Outside of the city center however, there are traditional villages and stunning luxury properties tucked away in the jungle.

My favorite of these secluded properties is Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve – one of only three reserve properties in the world (the other two are in Thailand and Puerto Rico). Visitors to Ubud are often encouraged to embrace a mindful journey of wellness, relaxation and healing, and Mandapa has beautifully embodied this concept.

Entering the open-air lobby at Mandapa I instantly felt a sense of peace. The lobby is surrounded by infinity edge pools, and jaw dropping panoramic views of jungle and the Ayung River valley below. It’s quite possibly the most unexpectedly beautiful lobby I’ve seen– so beautiful in fact, that I visited daily to relax and admire the view. How many lobbies can you say that about?

Reserve properties are known for creating exotic sanctuaries that include unique cultural elements, and Mandapa includes many traditional Balinese design elements. I loved the authentic décor and the buildings designed to blend in and compliment the landscape - creating the sense that they had existed forever, perfectly preserved, and waiting for guests.

This is an intimate property, with only 60 villas and suites. The villas are nestled into the valley and each one features a private outdoor garden and swimming pool. My favorite is the Rice Terrace Pool Villa with an infinity pool that appears to run right into the rice fields.  I could spend all day lounging in the sun with a book and a fresh coconut, gazing across the pool to the fields.

To help guests on their journey to spiritual and physical wellness, the spa can arrange blessings by a local shaman, energy and chakra aligning, or a session with an intuitive blind healer – as well as traditional body treatments. After the spa, I recommend a yoga session in the peaceful pavilion overlooking the river, or maybe a swim and refreshing cocktail at the hotel infinity pool. If you’re lucky, the resident cow – Manda – might be grazing nearby. She loves an apple or two.

A visit to Ubud would not be complete without experiencing the Balinese culture, and Mandapa offers a variety of activities for guests.  I chose a guided cycling excursion, which was a highlight of my time in Bali. We visited local woodworking artisans, learned about village life and rice farming, and peddled casually through scenic countryside villages.

Mandapa is truly an oasis in Bali. It’s exquisitely designed and offers the best of Balinese hospitality. It’s perfect for the discerning traveler who seeks a chic and relaxed retreat, with exceptional, highly personalized service.

Tulum: Quick Guide

Tulum-slider-1.jpg

Tulum has been a destination for artists and yogis since the 80's and in recent years has gained popularity by combining luxury, wellness, adventure and romance. If you're looking for a winter beach getaway that offers convenience from the U.S., hip hotels, excellent food and activities to keep you busy should you decide to leave the pool, then it's time to consider Tulum.

Hip Hotels

Hotel Esencia is set on a 50-acre estate between Tulum and Playa del Carmen  (20 minute taxi from downtown Tulum). Originally built as the private hideaway home of an Italian duchess, this beautiful hotel now offers discerning travelers 38 private suites, 3 villas, an exceptional private beach, and impeccable hospitality.

Mi Amor Colibri Boutique Hotel is a high end, adults only, waterfront boutique hotel perched on the rocky cliffs on the outskirts of Tulum (5 minute taxi from downtown). The hotel features 17 rooms, of which the most romantic feature private plunge pools and unobstructed views of the ocean.

Hotel Be Tulum is a hip hideaway in the heart of Tulum. The beachfront boutique hotel features 64 suites, each designed and built using local materials and featuring private plunge pools or in-room jacuzzi's. Take relaxation to the next level and book a rejuvenating treatment at the hotel's world renowned spa, Yaan Wellness Energy Spa.

Stay Active

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna, and was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1986. Shortly after, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean. Book a guided tour and enjoy snorkeling, swimming, a boat ride through the reserve and Mayan canal system and a stop at the Muyil Ruins.

Rent bicycles and cruise through Tulum stopping at the trendy beach boutiques and artist studios. When you're tired of browsing the shops, grab a drink at one of the beach bars and enjoy the scene.

Charter a boat for a privately guided snorkeling or diving tour off the coast of Tulum. If sitting back and relaxing with a drink in hand while cruising along the coast is more your style, no problem, that's an option too! Choose from sunset sailing to full day excursions where all you have to worry about is sunscreen and which beverage you'll be having.

Mayan Ruins! A visit to Tulum isn't complete without a stop at the Tulum Ruins. The 13th-century, walled Mayan archaeological site at Tulum National Park overlooks the sea and offers an interesting look at Mayan civilization. Another very popular option is a tour to Chichen Itza - the ancient capital of the Mayan world. A privately guided tour from Tulum is a full day excursion and includes stops for swimming at a Cenote (a natural freshwater pool) and in Valladolid - a quaint, well preserved colonial town.

Three Reasons To Visit Switzerland

I recently returned from a one week tour in Switzerland, and was reminded that this small country in the center of Europe, is a travel powerhouse. In fact, in many ways, Switzerland encompasses everything I love about traveling in Europe. The quaint cities are stylish and culturally interesting, and the countryside is filled with picturesque villages and activities to suit all interests. It’s truly a remarkable place.

In just one week, I visited two unique regions in Switzerland, traveled by scenic train, enjoyed Michelin starred dining and luxury accommodations, made my own Swiss chocolate, explored medieval city centers, e-biked through rolling hills and lakeside vineyards, experienced traditional festivals and floated the river Aare in Bern like a local. The opportunities in Switzerland are endless and can be experienced in as little as three days, making this country an excellent add-on to any European itinerary. Read on for three reasons why Switzerland should be added to your next European itinerary.

It's Easy

Switzerland is ideally located in central Europe, with frequent and direct train connection to major European cities, and direct nonstop flights between the U.S. and neighboring countries. The French TGV connects Paris with Geneva in just three hours, and the Swiss high speed railway connects the Swiss capital Bern with Milan in three hours. As Switzerland is a relatively small country, it's easy to create itineraries ranging from three, five or seven days, giving visitors choice in how they see and experience the country.

Switzerland is safe, very clean and English is widely spoken throughout the country. In addition, traveling around the country by train is efficient, organized and very easy to do. One of my favorite Swiss travel features is the affordable and efficient luggage transfer service, which gives visitors the chance to maximize sightseeing during travel days. Simply drop your luggage with reception in the morning, then comfortably travel by train, stopping in villages to sightsee or hike along the way, knowing that your luggage will be waiting in your room at the next hotel.

It’s Beautiful

Switzerland offers a wide variety of landscapes, from mountains, to farmland, to glaciers and valleys. The alpine villages dotting picturesque countryside appear to be straight out of a fairytale. The mountains are dramatic, the glacier water is turquoise blue and the rolling hills are so green they look like they’ve been painted. The cities are compact, charming and almost always have a mountain or water view to remind you that you’re still in Switzerland. Simply stunning.

It's Fun

Switzerland is truly a year-round destination featuring excellent winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, as well as hiking, walking, and water sports during the warmer months.  Visitors can also choose to try a number of extreme sports, like sky diving, whitewater rafting or hang gliding. In addition, with an extensive network of e-bike trails, it is possible to safely and easily enjoy the countryside by e-bike. E-bike tours can be single or multi-day and include stops at alpine farms to exchange the bike battery and interact with locals. If opting for a multi-day e-bike tour, overnight options range from rustic alpine huts to high-end hotels with fabulous spas.

If outdoor pursuits aren't on the agenda, there are museums, festivals, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and cathedrals to explore. In addition, visitors can learn to make Swiss chocolate, visit a dairy and learn about cheese making, wine taste, or enjoy world class spas.

Switzerland is an incredible destination and whether you’re a nature lover, outdoor or snow sport enthusiast, or lifestyle traveler interested in spas, culture, chocolate and food, there is truly something for everyone.

After personally meeting with more than 350 industry leaders and experts last week, I’ve pulled together a list of the hottest trends in travel right now.

Hot Destinations

Australia - Always a favorite on my list, I was excited to hear the buzz in the industry.  Excellent specialty lodges and a long list of fun experiences for all ages make this a hot destination for travelers.

Italy – A new hotel on Lake Como and a unique vintage car journey between Milan and Florence top the list. In addition there was a lot of buzz about villas in Tuscany and unique cultural experiences for everyone from couples to families.

France - Always a hot destination, people in the know were talking about the re-opening of iconic hotels in Paris and new daily TGV train service to Bordeaux in the South and Rennes in the Brittany region.

Peru – Lots of buzz about Peru, and not just Machu Picchu. Travel professionals in the industry are excited about Peru for its excellent food, culture, accessibility to the Amazon rainforest and epic hikes along the Inca trail (including visits to lesser known, but equally impressive ruins).

Hot Experiences

Small Ship Expedition Cruises – Fewer passengers, excellent service and immersive experiences. What's not to like about that? Stand out destinations include Iceland and the Arctic Circle, the Amazon Rainforest and the Galapagos Islands.

An Arctic Safari – Clients are raving about close encounters with polar bears, walrus and whales, kayaking past spectacular icebergs and enjoying mesmerizing displays of the Northern Lights. Arctic safari’s take place in Greenland, Northern Canada and Scandinavia.

The American West – The West has been beckoning travelers for centuries and now some very sophisticated ranches and lodges have appeared in Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, tempting travelers with open space, excellent spas, 5-star dining and of course, adventure.

Stopover in Dubai

Burj Al Arab, Dubai

Burj Al Arab, Dubai

Dubai is one of the busiest airports in the world, and as a growing transportation hub, there's a good chance that your upcoming travels may include a stopover in Dubai. Here are some recommendations for how you might spend your time.

Visit the Burj Khalifa

At 828 meters tall, this is currently the tallest building in the world, and the view from the top is impressive. Tickets for the At the Top experience give you access to the 148th floor and the tallest outdoor observation deck in the world. Sit back, relax and enjoy 360 views of the city.

Dubai Mall

Located at the base of the Burj Khalifa and featuring an indoor ski and snowboard park, this is Dubai’s largest and most popular mall. After you’ve watched (or participated in) the indoor skiing, grab an ice cream and head outside to observe the giant Dubai Fountain.

Dubai City Tour

Dubai Fountain, Dubai

Maximize your time by arranging a 2-3 hour private city tour so that you can quickly and easily see Dubai’s main sites. A typical tour includes a drive along Jumeirah Beach, including a stop at the beautiful Burj Al Arab, followed by a trip to the traditional Dubai Creek neighborhood where you will have time to wander the stalls of the very touristy spice and gold souks. If that doesn’t sound appealing, opt for high tea at the Burj Al Arab instead.

Eating and Sleeping

Enjoy dinner and drinks on the outdoor terrace at the Four Seasons, which offers a beautiful view of the Burj Khalifa.  Then get some rest! Dubai has a number of luxury hotels to meet every price point. The Palace Hotel, the Four Seasons and The Grosvenor House are a few Elliott and Rae favorites.

Desert Experience

For a unique and memorable experience, we highly recommend a night or two at the Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa. Nestled in the dunes of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, approximately 1 hour from Dubai, Al Maha showcases the heritage and architecture of the Bedouins while offering the finest in desert luxury and adventure.

Enjoy stunning views of the sand dunes and desert wildlife, the Arabian Oryx and Gazelles, from your private infinity pool or from the sitting room in your Bedouin style villa. Participate in two complimentary daily activities such as guided desert walks, 4x4’ing in the dunes, falconry displays, or camel riding and sundowners on top of the sand dunes. Or enjoy a treatment at the peaceful spa. The food in the onsite restaurant is very enjoyable and the staff are attentive, discreet and courteous. Watching the moon rise over the sand dunes from your infinity pool is sure to be a memorable experience.

The Seychelles: Add it to Your List

For the American traveler, Africa doesn't usually top the "tropical vacation" list. Instead, with our close proximity to so many other tropical vacation hot spots, like French Polynesia and the Caribbean, Africa is typically reserved for safaris and adventure travel. The Seychelles deserve to be on your tropical list. This unique 115 island nation is a tropical dream-come-true, with beaches as white as sugar, lush green jungles and water in every perfect shade of blue. If the Seychelles isn't on your list, here are a few reasons why you need to add it:

Biodiversity

The Seychelles is home to several very rare species of plants and animals. Home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites and several protected National Parks, there are excellent opportunities to appreciate the biodiversity found in this island nation. Notable endemic species include the Coco de Mer palm tree, the Aldabra Giant Tortoise and the Seychelles Magpie Robin.

Tropical Disease Free

Vacation in peace in the Seychelles. No Zika. No Malaria. No Yellow Fever. At the moment, there are very few tropical locations free of Zika, and the Seychelles happen to be one of them.

Luxury

The Seychelles offer an excellent range of world-class luxury hotels and resorts. From private islands to boutique luxury hotels - you're guaranteed to find a swoon-worthy hideaway. Elliott and Rae favorites include: The Six Senses Zil Pasyon on Felicite Island, North Island Private Resort, The Four Seasons Mahe Island and Raffles Praslin.

Beaches

The beaches in the Seychelles are some of the best in the world. The 115 islands making up the Seychelles are comprised of either granite or coral - in fact the granite islands are the world's only oceanic islands of granitic rock, and also happen to be the world's oldest ocean islands - which make for a variety of stunning beach settings. The granite rocks that adorn some of the most famous beaches are breathtaking.
