Three Reasons To Visit Switzerland

I recently returned from a one week tour in Switzerland, and was reminded that this small country in the center of Europe, is a travel powerhouse. In fact, in many ways, Switzerland encompasses everything I love about traveling in Europe. The quaint cities are stylish and culturally interesting, and the countryside is filled with picturesque villages and activities to suit all interests. It’s truly a remarkable place.

In just one week, I visited two unique regions in Switzerland, traveled by scenic train, enjoyed Michelin starred dining and luxury accommodations, made my own Swiss chocolate, explored medieval city centers, e-biked through rolling hills and lakeside vineyards, experienced traditional festivals and floated the river Aare in Bern like a local. The opportunities in Switzerland are endless and can be experienced in as little as three days, making this country an excellent add-on to any European itinerary. Read on for three reasons why Switzerland should be added to your next European itinerary.

It's Easy

Switzerland is ideally located in central Europe, with frequent and direct train connection to major European cities, and direct nonstop flights between the U.S. and neighboring countries. The French TGV connects Paris with Geneva in just three hours, and the Swiss high speed railway connects the Swiss capital Bern with Milan in three hours. As Switzerland is a relatively small country, it's easy to create itineraries ranging from three, five or seven days, giving visitors choice in how they see and experience the country.

Switzerland is safe, very clean and English is widely spoken throughout the country. In addition, traveling around the country by train is efficient, organized and very easy to do. One of my favorite Swiss travel features is the affordable and efficient luggage transfer service, which gives visitors the chance to maximize sightseeing during travel days. Simply drop your luggage with reception in the morning, then comfortably travel by train, stopping in villages to sightsee or hike along the way, knowing that your luggage will be waiting in your room at the next hotel.

It’s Beautiful

Switzerland offers a wide variety of landscapes, from mountains, to farmland, to glaciers and valleys. The alpine villages dotting picturesque countryside appear to be straight out of a fairytale. The mountains are dramatic, the glacier water is turquoise blue and the rolling hills are so green they look like they’ve been painted. The cities are compact, charming and almost always have a mountain or water view to remind you that you’re still in Switzerland. Simply stunning.

It's Fun

Switzerland is truly a year-round destination featuring excellent winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, as well as hiking, walking, and water sports during the warmer months.  Visitors can also choose to try a number of extreme sports, like sky diving, whitewater rafting or hang gliding. In addition, with an extensive network of e-bike trails, it is possible to safely and easily enjoy the countryside by e-bike. E-bike tours can be single or multi-day and include stops at alpine farms to exchange the bike battery and interact with locals. If opting for a multi-day e-bike tour, overnight options range from rustic alpine huts to high-end hotels with fabulous spas.

If outdoor pursuits aren't on the agenda, there are museums, festivals, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and cathedrals to explore. In addition, visitors can learn to make Swiss chocolate, visit a dairy and learn about cheese making, wine taste, or enjoy world class spas.

Switzerland is an incredible destination and whether you’re a nature lover, outdoor or snow sport enthusiast, or lifestyle traveler interested in spas, culture, chocolate and food, there is truly something for everyone.
